Getting Around Venice

How to Explore the City with Ease

The best way to get around the historic centre of Venice is on foot, using the vaporetto for longer distances and a private water taxi for those who prefer a more comfortable option, particularly when travelling with luggage or arriving directly from Marco Polo Airport.

Venice is a city unlike any other in the world. In the historic centre, there are no cars, buses or bicycles, just canals, bridges, campielli (small squares),‘fondamenta (streets running alongside a canal) and calli (alleys) just waiting to be explored.

This guide explains the best ways to move around Venice, with practical tips from our local team to help you make the most of your stay.

Walking Is the Best Way to Discover Venice

Walking is by far the most enjoyable way to explore the historic centre of Venice.

Many visitors are surprised by just how compact the historic centre actually is (no more than 5 km across). Most of the city's famous landmarks, including Piazza San Marco, the Rialto Bridge and Teatro La Fenice, can be explored on foot while discovering hidden squares, quiet canals and charming calli (streets) along the way.

Don’t worry if you lose your bearings every now and then. Wandering around Venice is part of the experience, and some of the city’s most charming spots are often found away from the busiest routes.

We strongly recommend wearing comfortable shoes, as you’ll be crossing numerous bridges and walking on traditional cobblestones throughout the day.

The vaporetto water bus, the Venice public transport

The vaporetto is the main form of public transport in Venice’s historic centre. The service, operated by AVM/ACTV, connects the various sestieri and the islands of the lagoon, including Murano, Burano, Torcello and the Lido, just like a bus network in any other city.

Some of the most picturesque routes wind their way along the Grand Canal, offering a unique view of Venice from the water. The service also runs at night, although with reduced frequency compared to daytime hours.

If you plan to use the vaporetto, remember to validate your ticket before boarding and allow a little extra time during peak hours, especially in high season.

The gondola: the charm of tradition

The gondola is one of Venice’s most iconic symbols.

Today, it is no longer a means of transport in its own right, as it was in the past, but above all an experience that allows you to explore the city from the water and admire its sights from a different perspective.

Fares are set by the City of Venice; however, before boarding, it is advisable to check the duration and terms of the service

When to take a water taxi

A private water taxi is the quickest and most convenient way to reach many parts of Venice’s historic centre, especially if you are travelling with a lot of luggage, arriving after a long journey, or if you are looking for a more exclusive experience.

Unlike public transport, water taxis can dock at private jetties, making your arrival much simpler and more convenient.

The Hotel Saturnia & International has a private dock on the Rio de la Veste, allowing you to reach the hotel directly by water taxi.

On your arrival, our staff will assist you with your luggage and welcome you for check-in. If you wish, our concierge team will be happy to arrange your transfer

How to get to Venice from Marco Polo Airport

From Marco Polo Airport, there are several ways to reach Venice’s historic centre, depending on your preferences. You can choose between buses, public water transport services or private water taxis. Each option offers a different balance between journey time, cost, comfort and views.

The bus (AVM/ACTV line no. 5) departs directly from Marco Polo Airport and goes as far as Piazzale Roma, from where you can reach your destination on foot, by vaporetto or by water taxi.

The public water transport service connecting Marco Polo Airport to the historic centre is Alilaguna. Its routes stop at key locations such as Murano, the Lido, San Marco, Le Zattere and Venice Santa Lucia railway station.

The water taxi is the quickest and most comfortable option, ideal for those wishing to travel directly to their hotel without having to change transport. It is also the most expensive option, but offers maximum comfort and great flexibility.

If you are unsure which option best suits your itinerary, our concierge team will be happy to provide personalised advice before your arrival.

Getting Around with Luggage

Venice is a pedestrian city, and many streets include bridges with steps.

If you're travelling with large suitcases, planning your arrival in advance can make a significant difference. Choosing accommodation close to major transport connections or accessible by private water taxi helps reduce the distance you'll need to walk with your luggage.

Why Staying in the Right Location Matters

Where you stay can greatly influence how easily you experience Venice.

Hotel Saturnia & International enjoys a privileged location in the heart of the historic centre, just a short walk from Piazza San Marco and Teatro La Fenice. The Santa Maria del Giglio and San Marco Vallaresso vaporetto stops are both just a few minutes' walk away, making it easy to explore the rest of Venice and the lagoon islands.

Many of Venice's most iconic attractions, restaurants and shopping streets can be reached on foot, allowing you to spend less time travelling and more time enjoying the city.
